2009 Champions Trophy, has now been named host of the 2009
Indian Premier League. The second edition of cricket's most
lucrative league was moved from India due to security
concerns.


Bafana snatch late win over Norway
It took a stoppage time goal, but Bafana Bafana sneaked a
2-1 win over Norway in the Nelson Mandela Challenge in
Rustenburg on Saturday to pick up their first victory over
European opposition since they beat Slovenia 1-0 in the
2002 Fifa World Cup.


2010 preparations impress Uefa
A briefing on South Africa's 2010 Fifa World Cup
preparations went down extremely well at the Union of
European Football (Uefa) Congress in Denmark last week.



New antenna for satellite centre


South Africa has unveiled a new, state-of-the-art X-band
antenna at its Satellite Applications Centre north-west of
Johannesburg. The R22-million antenna will enable the
centre to track more earth observation satellites and
increase its archive of earth observation data.


Fishing patrol ship makes waves
South Africa's environmental protection ship, the Sarah
Baartman, has returned to Cape Town after a patrol in South
African, Tanzanian, Mozambican and Kenyan waters during
which 41 fishing vessels were inspected and six arrested -
one of them forcefully.


Internet access to double by 2014
South Africa's internet population grew by 12.5% to
4.6-million in 2008, according to a new report, and is
expected to grow as much in the next five years as it has
in the last 15, hitting the 9-million mark by 2014.



Khulisa founder wins social award
Lesley-Ann van Selm has won a social entrepreneurship award
for her Khulisa crime prevention initiative, which works
with offenders in communities to make restitution, restore
personal pride, prevent recidivism and provide alternatives
to gangs, drugs and crime.


South Africa's newest national park
South Africa has launched the new Garden Route National
Park as part of a strategy to expand its conservation areas
from 6% to 8% of the country's total land area.
